hair of the dogの意味の由来
「hair of the dog」とは、調べると英語圏では、古くからの言い伝えで、狂犬病の犬にかまれたときはかんできた犬の毛を少量薬と混ぜて摂ることで、狂犬病が治ると信じられ「毒には毒を」ということで、転じてa hangover remedy「迎え酒」の意になったそうです。
「a hair of the dog that bit you」を短くして「hair of the dog」となったそうで、ここに英文でこれらを説明しているので載せておきます。
The expression the hair of the dog, for an alcoholic drink taken to cure a hangover, is a shortening of ‘a hair of the dog that bit you’. It comes from an old belief that someone bitten by a rabid dog could be cured of rabies by taking a potion containing some of the dog's hair. The correlation suggests that, although alcohol may be to blame for the hangover (as the dog is for the attack), a smaller portion of the same will, paradoxically, act as a cure. There is, it should be added, no scientific evidence that the cure for either a hangover or rabies actually works.

hair of the dogの意味の由来は狂犬病!?
ちなみにrabiesとは狂犬病のことで、rabid dogは狂犬病に感染した犬を意味するそうです。
狂犬病に罹った患者の症状symptomsは、激しい動きviolent movements、抑えられない興奮uncontrolled excitement、水への恐怖fear of water、体の一部を動かせないan inability to move parts of the body、混乱confusion、および意識の喪失loss of consciousness等が現れるそうです。
日本で今は全く狂犬病を聞かなくなりましたが、最近だと、フィリピンに行った人が犬にかまれて狂犬病を発症してしまったケースが何件か確認されているそうで、一番最新だと、2020年にまたもやフィリピンで三十台の男性が犬にかまれたことで発症してしまったというニュースもありましたね。
ちょっと怖いお話で申し訳ないです…。なのでこのワンちゃんで癒されてください。

では、日本では「迎え酒」という言葉がありますがどうでしょう。
日本では昔から、二日酔いには「迎え酒」をと、二日酔いの症状を緩和させるために「迎え酒」としてお酒を飲むことが慣習として存在していたようです。
江戸時代の川柳で「迎ひ酒あたまてんてんしては呑み」「あはれなるつらでぐびりと迎へ酒」」と詠まれることもあったそう…。
こちらもこれらは科学的根拠はなく、あくまでも人々の迷信だったようです。
